Best Cordless Hedge Trimmer

Best Cordless Hedge Trimmer Reviews

A hedge is a collection of shrubs planted together to form a linear row. Pruning is different from trimming. While pruning just involves cutting away unwanted parts of plants, trimming is complex: cutting shrubs in desired shapes and appearances. In trimming, the sides of a hedge are pruned at an angle flaring towards the outer part: to make the top of a hedge narrower than its bottom. The shape ensures the bottom part of a hedge receives sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis purposes.

Just like any other shrub, a hedge requires frequent trimming and watering. Trimming is critical for the long-term health of a hedge: proper trimming is important.

There are many tools you can use to trim your hedge. Some tools require manual energy, while others are powered by electric and gas energy.  The latter comes in two forms: cordless and corded. Corded trimmers require an extension cord that distributes energy from a fixed point like a socket to the machine. The cordless hedge trimmer has an energy provider installed within it. Cordless trimmers can be either gas-powered or battery-powered.

Are you tired of using a hedge trimmer that needs an extension cord every time you are trimming bushes around your yard? A cordless hedge trimmer will help you get rid of connection cables. You can use these trimmers anywhere without worrying whether the cables will reach the area of operation. Here, you are going to get answers for the following:

What are the models of cordless Hedge trimmers?

There are only two types of cordless hedge trimmers: gas-powered and battery-powered. They all come in different sizes and shapes. The type to buy depends on various factors which you are going to learn about later.

Gas-powered trimmers

They have a potent engine that makes it easier to cut thick branches cleanly and quickly. Gas-powered trimmers give you the freedom to roam around your yard while working. The machines have two-stroke engines that need you to mix gas and oil in proper portions. Although they are excellent at their work, sometimes they can be very noisy. Make sure you check if there are any restrictions against using such machines in your neighbourhood.

Battery-powered trimmers

The battery for these kinds of trimmers uses electric energy. You have to charge the battery first before you insert it into the tool. After the battery charge is depleted, you need to recharge again. Recently, the advent of powerful and long-lasting lithium-ion batteries has made these kinds of trimmers more valuable.

The battery-powered trimmers are light, easy to use, quiet and affordable. They are favourable for use in quiet neighbourhoods—no exhaust produced by these types of trimmers. Before you purchase, check whether the trimmer includes batteries and a charger.  Some battery-powered trimmers require you purchase batteries and a charger separately.

Cordless hedge trimmers grant you the unplugged freedom to cut anywhere. They’re extremely quiet, very powerful and can run for a surprisingly long time before you recharge the battery.

When to use cordless hedge trimmers

There are various factors that determine when to trim your hedge. They include; geographical location, shrub type, and the season of the year. The geographical location of your place determines how fast your shrub produces new leaves. Places that experience high amounts of rainfall suggest a higher growth rate for your shrubs.

A non-flowering shrub needs trimming every 6 to 8 weeks as they grow. You should time the trimming periods for flowering species to avoid interfering with the shrub’s bloom cycle. Shrubs that flower during the Summer season should be trimmed as the winter comes to an end or just after the Spring season begins.

What are the parts of cordless hedge trimmers?

To understand how a trimmer works, you need to know its components.

  1. Blade Support Rod: This part provides central support for the blade.
  2. Blade: Cuts shrub by moving back and forth rapidly.
  3. Handle: This is where you place your hand to grip
  4. Handle Switch: Pressed together with trigger switch for activating the blade
  5. Grip Lock: For locking the desired angle.
  6. Switch Lock: Works together with the trigger switch in making the unit operational.
  7. Trigger Switch: Used to activate the blade: pressed simultaneously with the handle switch.

How to prepare for trimming

Prepare for Layout Strings

Setting up some guidelines to follow while trimming is not easy. It is hard to guide the blade without unruly branches getting your way—the best option for dealing with such branches is using hand pruners. The essence of strings is providing an accurate reference in attaining a straight stretch for your hedge.

You should use four strings while settings up trimming guidelines. On each side of the hedge, place two strings: one at the bottom and the other at the top. If your hedge is tall, you can add a string on each side.

Set the First Pair of Stakes

Ground a stake at the furthest corner of your hedge using a mallet or a hammer. The position of the stake should indicate the spot where the bottom end corner fall. You should also remember to set the stake slightly away from the longest branches. The angle of the stake should slightly lean towards the hedge’s top. The reason for creating a lean is to ensure the hedge receives sufficient sunlight.

Drive a second stake into the ground at the opposite corner of your hedge. The second stake should be on the same side as the first stake. Angle it the same way you did with the first one.

Setting the first (lower) string

Set a long string running from the first stake to the other close to the lowest branches on the hedge. Ensure the distance above the soils is uniform from both sides. If your ground is level, the string ought to be level. Sloppy grounds will need a sloped string. A line level may be helpful if you find it hard to level the string.

Set the Upper String

Apply the same process you followed to set the lower string. The upper string acts as a guide on where you want the upper edge of the shrubs to fall. Ensure both ends are uniform. Use a tape measure to measure the distance from the lower string to where you want to place the upper string. Use a line level to check whether the string has a perfect horizontal. If your ground is flat, measure the distance from the ground for uniformity purposes.

After setting the strings,  take a hand pruner and cut all branches that deflect the strings.

Setting the Remaining Stakes and Strings

Repeat the procedure to set stakes and strings on the other unattended side of the hedge. Ensure all strings are taut and straight.

How to trim your hedge

Trim the Top of the Hedge

Begin trimming the top of the hedge to get a clear view of guide strings. You should hold your hedge trimmer as level as you can throughout the trimming process. Use a ladder if your hedge is tall.

Trim the Sides and Ends of the Hedge

Trim the hedge’s sides to create planes that are even with strings. Use a hand pruner to cut thick branches. If you notice thin spots and indentations in your hedge, you should not worry: trimming stimulates new growth that fills in the spots.

Trim the ends of the hedge

Typically, ends are squared vertically. Yet, you can choose to angle them inward, just like the way you trim the sides.

What to consider when choosing cordless trimmers

The best cordless trimmer model is one that meets all your unique needs. You might be swayed by reviews, reports, price and performance and end up having a trimmer that does not fulfil all you need from a trimmer. Look for a trimmer that you can afford, comfortable to uses, and handles the work you require it to perform. The following is what you should consider when choosing a cordless trimmer.

The size of your yard

If your property is not big, you do not need to use an expensive trimmer. A battery-powered trimmer will perform all the work you need. It is best for suburban and urban yards. However, if you have a yard that requires a lot of trimming, a gas-powered trimmer is the best model for you.

The trimmer’s weight

Choose a trimmer that is comfortable to lift, carry and roam around within your yard. If circumstances force you to use a heavy trimmer, you can use shoulder straps to hold the equipment.

Battery life

Cordless trimmers use the lithium-ion battery for power. The battery runs for between 15 to 60 minutes. The battery is then recharged; the process takes between 30 minutes to two hours. If you want to avoid recharging your batteries every time, you can opt for a gas-powered model. Also, you can invest in extra batteries to avoid waiting while batteries charge.

Comfort & adjustability

Choose a trimmer that is comfortable to work with. If you buy a trimmer that is not comfortable to use, there is a possibility you may not use it. Look whether the trimmer has shaft length, an adjustable handle, and a cutting head angle for comfortability purposes. Ensure all the controls are operating smoothly when using the trimmer.

The best trimmer is the one that makes you feel your hands balanced when working with it. A Balance is experienced when the weight is distributed evenly from the bottom to the top; the top should be slightly heavier. Models with top-mount motors have better balance compared to models with motors close to the cutting line.

Straight vs Curved shaft

If you care much about the trimmer’s appearance, you have to make a choice, whether to pick a trimmer with a straight shaft or with a curved one. There isn’t much difference in terms of performance.

Trimmers with curved shaft are easy to handle and lighter at the same time. The other models with straight shafts are favourable for tall users as they offer a longer reach.

Safety of the model

Choose a model that does not threaten your safety. Wear hearing protection when using a gas-powered trimmer. If you want to avoid putting on hearing protection every time you are working, you can opt for a battery-powered trimmer. Also, look for a model with a protected starter switch to prevent you from accidentally starting the trimmer.

What are the benefits of Cordless Hedge Trimmers?

There are benefits associated with having a cordless hedge trimmer that is absent in a corded trimmer. These benefits include:

  • Portability: You can freely roam around your yard trimming without pulling around cord extension.
  • Interchangeability of batteries: Most cordless trimmers can use interchangeable batteries with some of the battery-powered garden tools. You can swap the battering while they run out of charge.
  • Quiet operation: Battery-powered cordless hedge trimmers are quieter and best for neighbourhoods that have noise regulations.
