Best Carpet Stretchers – Knee Kickers & Power Stretchers

Are you looking for the best carpet stretchers? You’ve come to the right place. In this article, we will be discussing the top four carpet stretchers on the market. We will also be giving you a buyer’s guide so that you can find the perfect carpet stretcher for your needs.

What is a carpet stretcher?

A carpet stretcher is a device that you use to stretch your carpet. If your carpet is coming loose or has shrunk, using a carpet stretcher can help bring it back to its original length. They come in many different shapes and sizes, but most are simple tools that resemble pieces of wood with metal bars on either side.

What are the main types of carpets?

There are three major types of carpets in today’s market:

  • Natural wool rugs
  • Synthetic fibers
  •  Silk rugs

Depending on what type of rug you have will depend on how well it responds to being stretched by a stretcher tool. The biggest complaint that homeowners have about their rugs is when they start buckling or look wavy. This can often result from poor installation or when a rug has not been properly maintained and has started to wear down.

Types of carpet stretchers

There are two main types of carpet stretchers available for purchase. They are:

1. Power stretchers

Power stretchers are the most popular type of carpet stretcher. They are easy to use, and they can quickly stretch your carpet to its original length. Power stretchers come in both electric and manual models. Electric power stretchers are more popular because they are faster and more powerful than manual models. However, they also tend to be more expensive.

Pros of power stretchers

  • They are easy to use
  • They are fast and powerful
  • They can stretch your carpet to its original length

Cons of power stretchers

  • They can be expensive
  • They can be heavy and difficult to move around

2. Knee kickers

Knee kickers are a cheaper alternative to power stretchers, but they are also less powerful. They work by kicking them with your knee, which then stretches the carpet. Although they are not as powerful as power stretchers, knee kickers still do a good job stretching carpets.

Which is better, a power stretcher or a knee kicker?

Power stretchers are better than knee kickers for two reasons:

  • They are more powerful, which means they can stretch your carpet to its original length more quickly and effectively.
  • They are easier to use, meaning that even someone who has never used a carpet stretcher before can easily use a power stretcher.

That being said, if you are on a tight budget, knee kickers are a good alternative to power stretchers.

How do I choose the right carpet stretcher?

When choosing a carpet stretcher, you need to consider the following factors:

1. The type of carpet

Different types of carpets require different stretchers. You should choose a stretcher compatible with your carpet type to get the best stretch and results. For example:

Carpets made from natural wool or silk will work better with knee kickers than power stretchers because they are not as powerful.

Synthetic carpets tend to be easier to stretch than natural fibres such as silk and wool, so power stretchers may be your best option for this kind of rug. If you’re still unsure which type of carpet you have, try feeling one corner of your rug. Natural fibre rugs feel coarse and stiff when touched, whereas synthetic fibre rugs feel smooth and silky.

2. The size of your rug

The size of your rug also matters when choosing a carpet stretcher. Larger rugs require more powerful stretchers, whereas smaller rugs can be stretched with a knee kicker.

You want a carpet stretcher that is long enough to reach from one end of your carpet to the other without you having to move any furniture out of the way. If you have a large area, going for a longer tool might be best so that you don’t have to keep moving it all the time.

3. Your experience level

If you are a beginner, choosing a power stretcher over a knee kicker is best. Power stretchers are easier to use and don’t require as much strength or skill.

4. The type of surface you will be stretching the carpet on

Some surfaces are more difficult to stretch carpets on than others. For example, if you are trying to stretch a carpet on concrete, it will be much more difficult than stretching it on wooden floors. When choosing a carpet stretcher, make sure to consider the surface you will be stretching the carpet on.

5.  Material

Typically, the best material is plastic, as it will not damage your carpet or rug. Wooden stretchers can often leave dents and marks in your rugs. Some people find that metal stretchers work well for very tight areas but be careful as they may also damage your carpets!

6. Ease of use

Make sure that the carpet stretcher is easy to grip and can be manipulated into place with limited effort on your part. Also, check how tight you can make a stretch? You want a tool that will allow you to pull your rug as tight as possible without damaging it.

7. Weight

Carpet stretchers are heavy pieces of equipment so make sure you choose one that is not going to cause injury or strain by being too heavy for you to carry around! A handle of some sort will always help since this makes it easier for you to lift and move around.

5.Price & value

Last but certainly not least, look at the price tag. While high prices don’t always equate to high quality, you must find a stretcher that offers good value for your money.

How to effectively use a carpet stretcher

Once you have bought the right carpet stretcher, it is time to use it! Carpet stretching can be hard work, but here are some tips on how to get the best results:

  1. Prepare your surface. If you are working inside, make sure that furniture and other items are moved out of the way to give yourself enough space for pulling and stretching. If you are outside, make sure the ground is level and even so that your rug or carpet does not get damaged when you stretch it.
  2. Get started by loosely laying your carpet onto the floor (or area where you will be working) with one end hanging off slightly. Once laid down flat like this, take a roll of masking tape and mark out an area of approximately 3 feet by 4 feet (depending on the size of your rug) with tape.
  3. Take your stretcher and position it on top of the carpet at one end, making sure to hold it securely with both hands. Lean over the stretcher to put full pressure onto it, then use all your strength to stretch the carpet as tightly as possible. Make sure that you are pulling in a straight line away from yourself and not towards yourself or outwards. Then place masking tape along with the peak point where you have stretched, representing half of the overall length.
  4. Take your second roll of masking tape and measure down from this peak point by 3 feet (again, depending on how big your rug is). Then mark this point with tape.
  5. Now you have the overall length of your area to be stretched outlined in masking tape; it gets a little trickier from here. Move around so that you are standing at the point where the two pieces of masking tape meet and then pull on both ends equally – using all your strength – until they merge into one single piece of masking tape, which will now represent the mid-point of your carpet stretch.
  6. Again, as before, make sure that as you stretch it out evenly from this point to create an equal amount on either side of it (represented by those two adjacent pieces of masking tape which you placed earlier), marking these with additional pieces of tape as you go. You may need someone to help you hold the stretcher in place while doing this or use some clamps or weights to keep it steady.
  7. Finally, all that is left to do is stretch the carpet from each end until it meets in the middle at the last piece of tape you put down. If it’s a really big area, you might have to repeat these steps a couple of times to get a nice, tight finish.
  8. Allow your rug or carpet to dry completely before walking on it – usually, 24 hours is enough – and then enjoy your new, stretched flooring!

Frequently asked questions

1. How often should you stretch your carpet?

It depends on wear and tear, but ideally, this could be anywhere from every six months to a year.

2. What if my rug is not lying flat on the floor?

If your carpet is lifting at any part of it, it needs stretching. Simply follow the steps above to get that perfect finish that you are looking for. You will also want to make sure that there are no ripples or creases in the middle, as these can lead to premature wear of your rug’s backing – another sign that you need a good stretch!

3. When should I call the professionals?

When all else fails, and you require assistance with large carpets or rugs, it is best to call in a professional. They will have the tools and expertise necessary to get the job done quickly and efficiently, without any damage to your precious flooring.
