How to Set Up and Align a Satellite Dish (UK Sky & Freesat Guide)

Step 1: Mounting the Wall Bracket Securely

Your dish needs to be fixed to a solid masonry wall facing south. Use a spirit level to ensure the wall bracket is perfectly vertical before marking your drill holes. If the bracket is wonky, your elevation and azimuth adjustments will be completely skewed later on.

Drill your holes using an SDS hammer drill with a high-quality masonry bit. Insert heavy-duty wall anchors and bolt the bracket firmly to the brickwork using coach screws. Give the bracket a firm tug, it should not budge a single millimetre.

Step 2: Wiring the Coaxial Cable to the LNB

The LNB (Low Noise Block) is the plastic arm extending from the front of the dish that actually receives the signal.

Strip your RG6 coaxial cable back carefully, exposing the central copper core, and screw on an F-connector. Connect this to the LNB port. Wrap the connection tightly in self-amalgamating tape. This tape fuses to itself, creating a completely waterproof seal that stops rain from corroding the copper wire inside.

Step 3: Finding Astra 28.2°E (Elevation and Azimuth)

In the UK, all Sky and Freesat channels are broadcast from the Astra cluster of satellites, positioned at 28.2 degrees East. To find this, your dish needs a clear, unobstructed line of sight pointing roughly southeast. Trees or tall buildings blocking this path will instantly kill your signal.

First, set your elevation (the up and down tilt). Look at the metal bracket holding the dish to the mounting arm. You will see a stamped scale with degrees. For the UK, you generally need to set this between 22 degrees (in Northern Scotland) and 28 degrees (in Southern England). Nip the nuts up just enough to hold the dish in place, but keep them loose enough so you can still move it by hand.

Step 4: Fine-Tuning with a Satellite Finder Meter

If you tighten one side of the U-bolt fully, it will physically pull the dish a few degrees off target, ruining your perfect signal.
